A light post full of love – how to add unique and personal elements to your yard and home

We all have them.  Little momentos in drawers, jewelry boxes, shelves.  For us they were sitting collecting dust and rarely looked at, shoved out of the way and not part of our daily visual.

When we moved into our house there was still a post from an old deck that had been torn down.  For the first year here we hung bird feeders from it, but once our waterfall pond was finished we knew that post had more of a story to tell.

dscn6192

Here is how we created this lamp post full of personal momentos and whimsy.

  1. We created a post wrap that was 4 – 2″x6″ treated boards.  Screwed together to leave a 4″x4″ opening inside.  This also allowed me to lay the post down in our living room and work on a side at a time.
  2. We collected mosaic tiles, glass beads, fish bowl rocks, moments, broken necklaces, souvineer spoons, rocks, and all sorts of things that could withstand the outdoors.  If you are wanting to use a mirror here is how to easily break a mirror without making a huge mess.  Find a hard surface and put a layer of newspaper down.  Then the mirror then more newspaper.  Then use a hammer and starting gently tap the mirror. You can also place something small under the mirror like a pebble or coin before you hammer it.  Lift up the top layers of newspaper to check on the mirror and continue this to create as small of pieces as you prefer.  Then you can lift the larger pieces off as needed or put them in a container and gently lift the bottom layer of newspaper fold to contain all glass fragment then pour into garbage.
  3. We bought Liquid Nails for interior or exterior use.

dscn6191

4. Working in less than an 8 inch spaces at a time, squeeze the liquide nails onto the wood, thinner if it’s for a flat mosaic, thicker if you’ll be sticking on heavier or odd shaped items. Use a flat sides tool to spread the glue.

5. You can work in patterns, or shapes, secret things like initials or messages.  We put our address on one side, another side had a favorite necklace of mine that had broken, a pendant of my mom’s, my grandmothers necklace, a collector spoon I got at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, rocks from people and places.  It was full of an unfolding and telling of our journey; past and future.

dscn6195

dscn6194

5. Once a side was filled up and dried, there were places where I went in and filled in gaps, between items, essentially grouting with liquid nails.  If this was a flat mosaic with uniformed thickness then I would have filled with grout.  To do that; you’d attach pieces, wait to dry then scoop group onto top and use flat edget to smooth into cracks and openings.  IMPORTANT: use a damp cloth and wipe down surface will grout is still moist.  This will clean off the surface of your glass, mirror or tile pieces.  It may take a few times of wiping gently and rinsing the rag and doing it again.  Otherwise you’ll be left with a layer of grout over the top of your piece that’ll be incredibly difficult to remove later.   Once the piece is dry you’ll go back over it again with a damp rag to remove the dusty residue coating the piece.  You’ll then want to find a high quality grout sealer to protect your grout from absorbing rain, dirt, pollen, or other things.

6. Once our post was complete we slipped the wrapped post over our 4″x4″ post, topped it with a

board and attached a large solar lantern.

7. Use this technique for other fun things too; furniture like side tables, dressers, bird baths, gazing balls and more.   Here are a few examples that I have made or others have made:

dscn5958

This gazing ball was a very special gift given to me.  After my mother passed away my mother in law had gotten my mom’s bowling ball and bag.  Without telling me she secretely used my mom’s china pieces, the tag from her bag and more and glued them all to my mom’s bowling ball.  To this day, it’s one of my favorite things. So much thought from my mother in law and a piece of my mom not stored in a bag in our garage but our in our yard glowing everyday in the sunlight.  Adding joy to our days.

Hope this gives you some ideas on how you can use things laying around your house to make some fun meaningful goodies.

Commissions – the magical way to get exactly what you need

Have you ever asked an artist to create something perfect for you? It can sound intimidating, and truthfully some artists won’t do it.  But me, I love them.   I love seeing the ideas my clients come up with.  They are inspired by something they’ve seen, another piece of mine that they need a bit different, a name added.  You get the idea.

I want to share a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing.   Some things to consider when you’re looking:

what colors do you love?

what color is the room you’d like the artwork?

is there a style you’re drawn to? Rustic, romantic, bold and abstract? Don’t be afraid to ask for something in that style.

General size of the art you’re wanting.  A bold, room statement piece or a subtle smaller piece to accent an area.

One piece I just finished this week went like this:  I had the client tell me she loved the guitar piece I had a few years ago.  She wanted something like that to go in her living room.  Except she wanted her and her husbands initials monogrammed on it and their wedding date.  Plus she wanted lots of colors in the background.   So I emailed her a few ideas with a few different styles of writing and we came up with her design.  For commissions I require 50% deposit for me to get started, then the other 50% is due after I send you pictures and you approve the design.   You can find this sign here and have it personalized with your monogram and wedding date here.

Vanessa_Initials_SignFireplaceWEB

Forgive the horrible photo on this one but it turned out to be one my favorites.  There were specks of coppers and golds in the fall leaf.  There is a beautiful story behind this painting (that I’ll leave sacred with the client) but this large 30″ x 24″ artwork has turned a special moment into a daily reminder of love.

DSCN0234

HorsesFinalDrafts

This is an example of a step during the commission.  For this one, the client asked to have teal, reds, yellows, oranges and a touch of green featuring the Colorado mountains.  Then their last name.   So one the painting was finished, I send something like this to them to get both approval on the background, see if there are any changes needing to be made and also select the text style that they like best.  This sign is on a great solid wood plan and will be going over a door.

RagsdaleResidenceMockup

This glass was part of a set of glasses commissioned and sent out to New York City in time for a one of a kind Christmas gift.  Inspired by the movie, “Birds”.

TheBirds1_etsyweb_CLoseup

I hope this helps take a bit of the intimidation out of having custom artwork created.  I’ve often had people come to me and say, what can you do for $500, I want a scene with “fill in the blank”.  around this size….    what can you do.    This is common.  It takes the fear out of not knowing if an artist is going to come back with a quote of $200 or $2000 and puts a bit of the control back in your hands as the client.

So take a look around, get inspired.  Look at your home, your office, is there something that could go in those spaces that speaks to you directly and inspires you?  Let’s chat and find out if we can create the perfect piece for you.

Butterfly wishes from Grandma

This past year I’ve been shown in a million ways that I am supposed to paint the Sacred Hellos artwork.  Validation to others, they aren’t crazy when they see signs; especially the ones who aren’t as vocal as I am about talking about those signs.  Also a comforting, recognition to the hellos I have gotten. They give me so much comfort and peace. After losing my own mom and other’s since I’ve been open to receiving and paying attention to the signs thsey send.  I’m so grateful.  I don’t go looking for them but I do try to notice them once they are there.      Well I have tears today as I realize another perfectly orchestrated hello from a new angel in Heaven.

Since I created the Sacred Hellos artwork I’ve had people asking me if I had any butterfly art. But this week it was all amplified. This week I’ve been overtaken by inspiration, numerous people asking for butterfly art.  I knew that I now was the time to paint them.  I sketched, plotted then I worked all day on Wednesday painting butterflies.

Today, in a completely different mind space I spent time this morning watching videos that my ex-brother in law has taken of his Grandma. This would be my exes Grandma. Sky’s great-grandma.  She was an AMAZING woman.  I feel so blessed to have known and loved her these past 18 years. She passed away earlier this week.  I’ve felt a range of sadness for those she’s left behind and complete happiness for her; imaging her reuniting with her husband who passed away long before I knew her and also seeing her parents again.  She was ready to go be with them.

Below is one of the videos I was watching. It’s a couple years old, yet I haven’t ever seen it.  Feel free to jump to the 6 minute mark.

She talks about how she wants to come back as a butterfly.   Chills and tears.

Hal has taken hundreds of hours of video of Grandma. She grew up in New York and is a bold, beautiful Italian woman.  Her blunt, bold style was a new world for me after growing up with my reserved, Minnesota family.  She was full of love.  Her and Skylar shared a birthday. We were all Capricorns and she called us her Minnesota Nanny Goats.

I just sit today in rememberance of her.  I feel like I got a visit that I wasn’t even aware I was getting now looking back at the paintings of butterflies that have overtaken my week.

Thank you for the hello Grandma.  Love you forever!

Here are the paintings from this week. You can click on them to learn more.

Art in the Making – Tulip Blossoms

Years ago after going through the experience of an ectopic pregnancy I got a glimpse into the pain many women (and men) go through when mourning and healing through a miscarriage.

I’ve connected with many women since then who have experienced this, this video today is for each of you and your little angels waiting for us in heaven.

Sending love and hugs. See the messages hidden within this painting as I paint it.

Fall updates and new announcements!

It’s been a year full of all sorts of changes so I wanted to take a few minutes and share a few new stores I’m in, where you can find my work and what new work I’m offering.  Plus I have a SUPER big announcement that I haven’t told anyone about yet. You’ll find that all the way at the bottom.  yep, I’m (not so subtly) sneaky like that.

At the end of July I ended my year at the studio, it was a really great time. I made a tough decision to listen to the inner voice telling me that even though it was great and parts I loved, it wasn’t a perfect fit.  I found myself producing and selling a lot of work, racing between home and the studio and yet somehow not any further ahead. I am learning to really appreciate that as much as I fight it, it’s when I quiet down and make myself sit in that silence for a bit that my best and deepest (most daring) ideas come to me.  2 days after moving out of the studio my family went on a 2 week road trip through Utah and out to Oregon and up to Washington and back through Montana. We did about 1/2 camping and 1/2 hotels. It was really great. Not only is the nature and site seeing incredible I am always amazed at how much it feeds my soul to take time away and be an observer. I let myself relax more, reserve judgement and just take it all in. I don’t think I’ve been on a vacation yet that didn’t change me and help me know myself better. Now with both the kids at school and preschool each day and after the changes I feel like I’m finding my groove again and hitting my stride.

NEW artwork, stores and more:

My music artwork is hanging on display until the end of the month at the Egg & I East restaurant in St. Paul (off Univ. and 280).

In a few weeks you’ll be able to start finding my Soulful Yoga artwork at the Living Waters Cafe. 12201 Minnetonka Blvd, Minnetonka, MN 55305

I have a few studios out east now carrying my Soulful Yoga series, you can also now find my prints, cards and some pallet artwork in Anoka, MN at the New Moon Metaphysical Store. They are great, and offer classes and more.

I have been expanding my small print selection.  These are small prints mounted into a 5″x7″ mat. They are ready to fit into a standard size frame that can be found at any store. People have been loving them to give as gifts and they are perfect to hang up around the office or a cubicle.  I have a few new selections on my Etsy page.

Here is my newest pallet art designs. These are so versatile, I hope you’ll love them: (you can click the image to see them on Etsy)

Harmony Project:

Lastly, I am excited to announce that I’ve hit the $2500 mark on my fundraising for my Israel trip!!  I thank each of you who have so generously donated and purchased bracelets from me the last 8 months.    I’m both trying to celebrate the moment and feel the gratitude and also know that I still have $7000 still to raise.  I have to admit that it is not in my comfort zone to feel so publicly vulnerable and at such risk to not reach my goal all while everyone is watching.  I am trusting that things will continue to come together and I know that I am meant to be over in Jerusalem next May.  I see such a need for what we’ll be doing over there. In fact I love it that I’m beginning to be abt le to use some of these same skills and perspective I’m learning for over there and apply them right here in my own town and in fact even my own family.  This entire journey is so beautifully teaching me and making me a better person.  I would love to ask you to take a look at all the bracelets I have on my website. I have gotten another 80+ in since I’ve shared before.  The earth tone brown seems to be the most popular this fall, there are just a few of those left.  You can view them by either color or style on the website. I will also have bracelets with me at each of the shows listed above.  You can see them here.

DSCN3439   chrysanthemum_Multi9_13 BlossomsAndScrolls_Bracelets_9_13

I also have an online fundraising drive going for the next 27 days. I am at $33 raised out of a goal of $500 on here.  If you can even donate $11 I’d be SO grateful.  There are some new incentives and gifts for donations this time also.  Please check it out. http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/noelle-rollins-harmony-israel-palestinian-trip-round-2

Stars for Dad and other new artwork

*tip – make sure to show the pictures, it’ll be much more fun that way.

Hello,

I hope you had a relaxing Memorial Day Weekend. We spent ours camping up north and it was so peaceful. I just love sitting around a fire and taking time to hang out, read some magazines (Mingle and Where Women Create – they are amazing!!) and hang out with family and friends. Summer is amping up pretty quick, got the garden planted and all the flowers in. This weekend it’s mulch and we’re thinking 2 apple trees. The older I get the more I appreciate the simple acts of planting and connecting with nature.

I just sent out the last of the fastpitch artwork from May’s artwork special. I thank each of you who participated and ordered an original. The next sports special will be in August and that will feature a Volleyball and I’m debating between dance and cheer for the 2nd one. (If you have an opinion let me know). Then in Sept or Oct it’ll be Basketball and Hockey. You can purchase any of the sports artwork here.

Two weeks ago Aspen started daycare full time, I think it’s been harder on me than on him. Such a strange transition. He’s handling it like a champ though. Since January I’ve been balancing work with being home with him most days so I have to admit that as much as I miss hanging out everyday with my little man I’m excited to dive in full time again at the studio. I’m planning on being at the studio Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s all day and until lunch on Tuesday’s and Thursdays. Stop on in any time and say hi if you’re in the area.

Aspen tried pudding for his first time a couple weeks ago, I had to share these photos. Love him.

I’m so excited about this artwork that I’m starting the special a day early. Is there anything better then being out in nature and looking up into the night sky? Other News:

Friday June 14th, Crossroads Art Class

Gather up the girls for a painting class! People have loved taking this class.

Rising up through women everywhere is a nudging need to connect with themselves on a deeper, more soulful level. People are busy, racing through each day’s to-do list and left feeling depleted, exhausted and guilty. I created this class as a place to connect with that deeper, wiser, calmer part of ourselves. To gain perspective, confidence and take time for ourselves.

So often we are between the calm and the chaos in our lives. This bold, fun artwork is full of reminders to hold our heads high as we work through changes and different times of life. You will learn techniques to create the background and can create it to match your décor or mood. $38 – 11”x14” canvas or $45 – 16”x20”

This class if perfect for anyone from a beginner to an expert, we will take our thoughts out of our mind. Focusing less on the details, exact techniques and comparing our work to others. We will go into our hearts and create from a creative, explorative and non-judgemental space.

Have a great weekend everyone!! As always, if you have any questions about getting some custom artwork made, a mural or wanting something you don’t see on my website just send me an email. **Noelle

P.S. If you would like to support my May 2014 Harmony Project trip to the Israeli-Palestinian region you can still buy bracelets and learn more about it here. I am grateful for all the donations I received the last few months (a special thank you to Marilyn, Nola, Liv, Doreen and Angie who have each donated $50 or more). I will start another donation campain at the end of summer, in the meantime the best way to help is to order a bracelet, a “She” print or book an art class for you and your friends or family. I look forward to connecting with my Israeli and Palestinian sisters and holding a space for peace and love to grow.

Fastpitch and Soccer Art Special

Time sensitive Sports Artwork Special!

As the sun is shining and I think about my daughter’s first fastpitch tournament of the season this coming weekend I get excited.  I love the sport, the smell of the grass, getting to hang out and watch her dedicate herself to learning and growing in the sport. I also love an excuse to sit outside and let the world around us stop for a bit as we cheer her on.

I love to paint things that inspired people to live authentic and inspired lives. For years that included numerous pieces of music scenes, mind body and spirit connection work and now recently again I’m inspired to connect with the love of sports I and so many others have.

It’s an exciting feeling to have an original piece of artwork that has been specially created just for you. It goes on the wall and there is pride there knowing you connect with it. It gives the world a glimpse into what you are about.  I want to give you a chance to get an original artwork piece for yourself or someone you care about.

Earlier this year I offered the baseball and football special. (These are still available at the regular prices.) It was such a success that I’ve decided to add a few more sports every couple months.

For May it is the bold neon yellow fastpitch softball and the black and white soccer ball in the grass.
