Today I want to start a new weekly feature called, “The story behind the art”
I created this artwork about 8 years ago. I was going through a divorce, I was back in Minnesota in a place of refinding myself. I knew what I didn’t want to be and I knew where I wanted to get to. I was somewhere in the middle. I was caught between the calm I wanted and the chaos I didn’t. I frequently thought of the classy women in my life that were who I looked to for advice or to see how they’ve handled themselves at defining times in their own lives. I remember my friend Tammy when she was going through something saying in her fabulous southern accent, “I can either choose to handle this like they do on Jerry Springer or like Oprah, I choose Oprah.” It’s funny how such a simple line has helped me through so many situations. Choose classiness and all that is good over being sucked into the part of you that wants to rip someones eyeballs out. Now don’t get me wrong, there are times you need to give it right back to someone, don’t be a punching bag, it’s not wrong or unclassy to set appropriate boundaries with people when they are trying to put their own crap onto you. But I try to remember to keep my head high and embrace my fabulous, even during those times I surely don’t feel fabulous or classy.
I think this artwork has resonated with so many people because there are times in all of our lives where we are in the in-between zone. We want to be reminded of what is possible and to just keep going and be aim to be strong; knowing there are great things ahead.
